Obituary

John Douglas Johnson, 72, son of Franklin Johnson and Juanita (Munsell) Johnson, was born August 9, 1944, in Jefferson, Iowa. He passed away Friday, November 4, 2016, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at Panora United Methodist Church, in Panora, on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Beverly Marshall-Goodell officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

John graduated from Rippey High School in 1962 and attended Boone Junior College for one year before graduating from Northwest Missouri State College in 1966. Along the way, he married his high school sweetheart Judith Gilmore on June 7, 1964.

John enjoyed a long and successful career as a Certified Public Accountant, working with four firms throughout Iowa and Nebraska. He spent the majority of his career with Gronewold, Bell, Khynn & Co. in Atlantic where he was a partner and at one time served as the firms president. Upon retirement from GBK in 2001, he and Judy moved to Panora and made their home on Lake Panorama. In recent years, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, AL.

In addition to raising their two children, John and Judy served as foster parents for several years, ultimately welcoming nine foster children into their lives. John enjoyed time with his family, but was also involved in the communities where he lived. In Atlantic, he served on the board of Heritage House and was a longtime member of the Jaycees, serving a term as President. He held leadership roles on various committees in his church communities, and was an officer of the Sunset Pines Townhome Association. John enjoyed singing with the Nishna Valley Chordsmen barbershop chorus in Atlantic as well as church ensembles and choirs. Most recently, he was a member of Panora United Methodist Church.

Johns favorite hobbies allowed him to enjoy time with others, engaged in activities such as hunting, fishing, boating, travel, golf, and playing cribbage, euchre, or other card games with friends. He was always generous; a kind, gentle, compassionate, and patient man who rarely complained.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, and nephew Christopher Klinzman. He is survived by his loving wife Judy; daughter Bonnie Talik of Nixa, MO; son Jim Johnson and his spouse Barry Magee of Ellettsville, IN; brother Larry Johnson and his wife Darlene of Story City, IA; grandson Kyler Talik of Nixa, MO; in-laws; two nieces, a nephew, and their families; cousins; and many friends.
