Obituary

Robert F. Waite, 78, of Johnston, Iowa, passed away on February 19, 2024, surrounded by his children. Bob was born to Jean and George Waite on July 5, 1945. He was the youngest of three children and was adored by his sister Nancy and brother George. He spent his youth exploring the woods and caves of Jones County, Iowa. He briefly attended college in Rochester, Minnesota, and had plans to become a sixth-grade science teacher. That plan was cut short after the death of his father in 1964. He returned to Anamosa to help care for his mother, before enlisting in the Army. He served in Berlin from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam War. In 1970, he married Nancy Tigan. They raised their children Stephanie, Jenny and John in Dexter, Iowa. Bob and Nancy were involved in the community and loved Dexter. Bob served as both a council member and mayor during the 1980s and 90s. He worked as a sweater salesman and when he wasn't traveling, he spent time camping with his children and nephews, Paul and John. Nieces and nephews who visited The River campsite were usually forced to hit the target with the BB gun prior to fire-roasted hotdogs. Later, he and Nancy retired to Anamosa, where he loved being recognized as Little Bobby Waite. After Nancy's death in 2005, Bob spent his years enjoying music and nature in Anamosa. In 2019, Bob relocated to Johnston to be closer to family. Bob was preceded in death by his father George Waite, mother Jean Maring Waite, sister Nancy Waite Mockenhaupt, brother George and wife Nancy Elizabeth Waite. Bob is survived by his children Stephanie Severson (Tom), Jennifer Hernandez, John Waite (Amanda), his grandchildren Noah Hernandez, Quinn Severson, Claire Severson, Tatum Severson, Mary Alice Waite and Harriet Waite, along with many nieces and nephews. Bob enjoyed listening to music and sharing that music with others. He complained about every pet his children and wife ever had yet loved those cats and dogs immensely, maybe not the lizards. He felt most at home in the woods and taught everyone he loved to walk "with their Indian shoes on" and leave the place better than you found it. His children and grandchildren carry on this legacy. The appreciation for a hike in the woods, music, and laughter around a campfire is the priceless heirloom he leaves for his loved ones. Bob did not want any services and probably is upset that this announcement is published. In a final act of disobedience, his family would like to invite you to a gathering to remember Bob on May 11, beginning at 2:00 PM at The General Store in Anamosa, Iowa.
